Hello. My name is Andy Atzert. I’m a former New Yorker who retired in late 2025 and moved to my wife’s hometown in rural Japan. This blog is a record of my thoughts and experiences.
Today I was in the city of Takamatsu for the funeral of my wife’s aunt, who was 96 years old. We joined her cousins and their children for the ceremonies, which included chanting Buddhist sutras, led by a head priest and assistant priest in colorful robes, and a large bento box meal afterwards. Here is a photo of the aftermath of the meal: empty bento boxes, soup bowls, and beer bottles beneath a supply of prayer beads.
